A sparse Sicilian kitchen without all the electric gadgets of America

My great-aunts are busy kneading the raw dough with neatly coifed hair, newer dresses under hand embroidered aprons

Three old women are pressing the yellow pasta dough between their fingers and hands

Whisking their small wooden boards with wisps of flour without looking

Outside the open kitchen door small birds chirp and flutter in the small sheltered garden

I pick at my one early morning Danish and sip my strong black coffee

My aunts are changing tasks and an empty basket is centered on the table

Lined with a small clean hand towel and now each have a long strand of straw

Small squares are cut from the three balls of dough

Rolled around the straw, pulled-out and each noodle hung in and outside the basket

This fresh handmade tubular pasta will be our lunch

My family, a dozen adults and a half-dozen young adults will all eat this pasta for lunch; the sauce is simmering on the stove

But what caught my attention was the one Danish, I wondered how scarce Danish are in this small village

It seemed a day old, I wondered the value of this one Danish and the luxury it represented 

I was thinking if I were home I would eat two or three of these, eating each one in three to four bites

For the first time I realized they were watching me as I was watching and studying them

I took tiny bites and we talked about hot summer days and swimming down the street in the warm blue Mediterranean Sea
